Rand-Air to the rescue on smelter

Downtime is simply not an option for a global producer and supplier of natural resources. When the company needed to undertake maintenance on its reservoir, management faced the challenge of temporarily replacing the compressed air capabilities on its smelter. “The customer determined that half of their compressors would be seconded to the reservoir maintenance project. Obviously, the smelter needs to run at full capacity, so an alternative compressed air supply was urgently needed,” says Louwrens Erasmus, General Manager of Rand-Air. 

The customer had previously hired a number of oil-free Atlas Copco 1500 cfm compressors, with driers, from Rand-Air. “The customer knew exactly what equipment was required to achieve the consistent delivery of quality dry air to the plant from their turbine compressors. The company was adamant that it could not afford to allow wet or contaminated air to enter its reticulation system,” Louwrens explains. 

Rand-Air was the only local rental company that could supply these high-quality oil-free compressors. Atlas Copco’s oil-free compressors are certified to CLASS 0 with regard to oil content, according to the latest edition of the ISO 8573-1 standard. “Atlas Copco was the first compressor manufacturer to receive the certificates, proving all of its oil-free air technologies comply with international standards,” Louwrens comments. “Compared with oil-injected compressors, Atlas Copco oil-free air compressors offer customers the benefits of lower costs and environmental compliance. In addition, only oil-free compressors can eliminate the risk of oil contamination,” he adds. 

The Rand-Air team was quickly mobilised and after delivering the oil-free compressors to site, they were attached to the customer’s quick coupler manifold arrangement. “The compressors were on site for two days and, according to feedback from the customer, provided the company with a constant supply of superior-quality clean, dry air,” says Louwrens.

In addition to the uncompromising quality and efficiency of the Atlas Copco oil-free compressors, the customer commented on the high service levels received from the Rand-Air team. “Rand-Air has spent many years investing in programmes that systematically enhance our service offering to customers.
